Meals On Wheels

Providing a Helping Hand and a Hot Meal for the Homebound

Program: Home Food Delivery

Senior Outreach Services delivers hot, nutritious meals primarily to frail, homebound persons over the age of 60 who are unable to cook or shop for themselves. Participants
benefit from daily health and wellness checks and ongoing client monitoring, including in-home visits by outreach workers.

We deliver more than 200,000 meals within our community each year, through:
• Meals on Wheels
Home delivery of nutritious meals and wellness checks for more than 550 elderly persons daily.

• Senior Cafes
Serving over 300 hot lunches to seniors each weekday at six different community locations.

Mission
Our mission is to provide safe, nutritious meals to all frail, homebound seniors living in Contra Costa County. The services we provide are structured to assist seniors to live at home in safety, in comfort, and with dignity for as long as they can.

Our History
Meals on Wheels by Senior Outreach Services is an entrepreneurial nonprofit organization with a 37-year tradition of excellence and service in Contra Costa County. Our success and expertise qualify us to manage community-enhancing health and human service programs for seniors. We enrich the lives of more than 5,000 county residents each year.

Our Clients
Our clients are primarily people choosing to live at home as they age. Many are low-income and frail or disabled. Forty-five percent are ages 75-84. Twenty percent are age 85 and older – the fastest growing group in our community.

Our Partners
Our partners include local government, corporations, foundations, civic groups and faith-based organizations. Individual donors support our mission as well.

Staff and Volunteers
Senior Outreach Services provides a significant human resource to serve the growing number of seniors in our community, with a multicultural and bilingual staff of 30 and over 1,400 active volunteers.

Funding
Meals on Wheels receives partial funding by the County government as part of the Older Americans’ Act. However, in the face of shrinking budgets, we must turn to our neighbors to make up the difference and help us to expand our reach into the community to handle the growing demand for assistance.
• Every dollar donated produces eight dollars worth of actual service to the senior population in our county.
• Independent audits confirm that $.92 of every dollar received goes directly into programs
